Build A Hallway Bookcase

If you love books, sooner or later you'll need lots of bookshelves.

The only place I could find in our house for a large bookcase was in our hallway.

We had built a picture rail using brick molding and trim for family photos. There was also small glass topped sofa table in that hallway.

 Out it came, and in came lots of shelves for books.

 We had to keep it narrow. The closet in that hall holds all my Tupperware and other containers.

 The door at the end leads to the laundry room and garage.

The shelves are only 8" deep. 

They are large enough for standard sized books.

Larry built 3 bookcases and joined them together. Each bookcase is 32"wide and 8' tall. He them trimmed the seam using 2" fluted molding. The shelves were trimmed with 1" screen molding.

The base was also trimmed.

Matching trim was added to the top.

We used 1x8 boards.

We added white beadboard paneling to the back.

Quarter-round molding finished the seam by the wall. 

I hung a set of floral prints in navy frames along the right side.

 I have the fiction sorted by author. The nonfiction is shelved together and sorted by subject. Baskets for storage and a few collections fill in the extra space waiting for more books.

I love looking at my books on my bookcase.

Treasure Hunting in Delray Beach

After taking lots of photos of Cathy's house HERE and HERE, we headed out for lunch by the beach....
but first we made a few stops.

Our first stop was Mango Joe's garden center. 

For inspiration.

This is a great way to build an arbor. I'll put it on the "Projects" list.

I've been eating oysters for years and saving the shells. Now I know what to do with them!

We saved our old kitchen sink for a "someday" potting bench. 

This one motivated me to move that project up the list.

We then hit a few antiques stores, and onto the GW thrift store.

Cathy got a nifty little mesh fedora with a leather band that she wore the rest of the day.

I got: a small wicker picnic basket, 4 vintage corning saucers that I thought matched cups I had bought on another thrifting day, and my fave buy of the day...a vintage cake tin. All less than $12.00.

Love the yellow daisies.

And yes, the cups did match the saucers.

Amapola Dishes

My Villeroy & Boch dishes in the Amapola pattern
are the ones I chose to use for a Spring tablescape.

The dishes have a blue and coral poppy flower.

I can use blue, green or coral accents.

It was manufactured from 1981 thru 2001.

 I have a service for 12.

First layer: I started with a green silk tablerunner.

Second layer: I added an inexpensive rubber placemat

 that I normally use on the patio, because I can leave them out.

Third layer: a silver charger.

Fourth layer: dinner plate.

Fifth & sixth layer: the handled soup bowl with saucer.

The pattern is raised which gives it a nice detail.

Tableware and glasses, cups and saucers are next.

Spring green napkins are folded into Longaberger blue pottery napkin rings.

Completed place setting.

A blue teapot and creamer from Target.

I made a pedestal for the hurricane candle using an upside down soup bowl and salad plate.

Coral flowers in a Longaberger plant basket that sits in a wrought iron stand. 

A wine basket holds a bottle of wine for dinner. 

My favorite grilled salmon with grilled asparagus and oven roasted red potatoes.

Dog Tired

Lucky is in his favorite basket.

 The basket is next to the sofa table.

 His leg is sticking way up in the air.

 This is his basket and the other two doggies have their own favorite spots.

He's crashed!

Cathy's House...part 2

We're back at Cathy's Delray Beach home with a look into the living room.

An antique iron and glass lamp sits on a stack of books alongside a large white birdcage. 

Another one of Laurie's paintings can be seen above the chair.

It's a painting of Hal and Cathy's summer cottage in Canada. 

The view is from the dock, up the stairs onto the deck.

I love the vintage stool under the table. 

She's had it forever and has used it everywhere.

Now it's stacked with a few favorite books.

An antique drop leaf desk serves as a side table next to the sofa.

Another great painting.

 Handy husband Hal tiled the back sink wall in the powder room with glass tiles. A new medicine cabinet and pedestal sink were also added.

Upstairs in the master bedroom. Cathy searched for shutters that would fit the two narrow windows on each side of her bed. She found a pair on ebay.

One shutter panel worked in each window.

She refurbished them with turquoise paint.

Then gave them a crackle finish. A little shutter love.

The bedroom curtains billowing in a warm Florida spring breeze.
