Adding Beadboard to Cabinets and Backsplash

We've made a big change in our kitchen!
I love beadboard. I love it's cottagey look.
I have wanted to add more of it to my kitchen.
Up until now I couldn't get beadboard on the
back of my open cabinet because it's
thickness would interfere with the width of
the shelves and the center support.
Problem solved!
I finally got the look I was after using
beadboard wallpaper
I found it at Lowe's for $19.
Here's the inside back of the cabinet done.
Time to make a batch of my brownies
before we tackle the backsplash.
We wanted the backsplash part to be
removable and not ruin the tile.
We used a thin piece wood we had
from another project and cut it to size.
We cut out holes for the outlets.
We could then easily apply the wallpaper
and paint it before installing it..
We painted it, as well as the cabinet backs
with 2 light coats of BM Cloud White.
It was the same paint we used on the
big salvaged cabinet project under ou bar
counter, (HERE).  We just pressed the
beadboard covered wood sheet into place
under the cabinet. It was a snug fit and
didn't require any glue. Again, we wanted to
be able to remove it if needed in the future.
To finish off the ends and give the piece the
look of a piece of furniture, we added
brackets. Larry attached them at the
top from inside the cabinet. It further
helped to hold the backsplash firmly in
place. A small piece of molding
was added to the bottom
of the bracket to finish the edge.
Here it is finished waiting for the painted
outlet covers to dry before adding. The
beadboard pattern continues from inside
 the cabinet down the backsplash.
Bringing a few of my white and green pieces
onto the counter for March. The green
bottles are filled with oils and vinegar.
A green bunny platter on a plate rack
looks great against the white beadboard.
The dishes for March are
Portmeirion Botanic Garden.
Here's a close-up of the back.
We have real beadboard in other areas
of the kitchen and this looks just like it.
We are very happy with how it turned out.
We just needed to buy the paper and the
two brackets and still have paper left over
for another another small project.
This backsplash and cabinet lining will
work with all of my holiday and
seasonal dish changes.
It lightens up the kitchen too.
 The March look.
We left the two small cuphooks under
the cabinet for all my signs.
This one is 'Happy St. Patrick's Day'.

Cheers!

  1. Beadboard wallpaper - what will they think of next! Terrific idea!
When I logged on to your blog just now and A Summer Place began to play it was deja vu. I used to have that very song on my Playlist on my blog for the longest time. I loved having music on my blog but I no longer have it at this time. That is one of my all-time favorite songs! It reminds me of my youth, it was so popular when I was approx junior high age. :)

  4. So glad you shared this. I was headed to Lowe's today to buy the actual board. I just inherited my grandmother's china and wanted to add painted board in the cabinet to make the china pop. I hope my looks as nice as yours turned out! Great job by you and hubby :)

  9. It looks great! I especially like the brackets you added. DD2 has been wanting to take the doors off a couple of her cabinets, but she needs to figure out storage before. Sure couldn't keep what's in there now. lol

  19. I love it! I think the backsplash and the brackets were just the thing to make it look like an open hutch. Soooo clever.

  20. This is exactly what I wanting to do to my kitchen.
I have beadboard cabinet fronts, so I think a back splash done in it will just set everything off.
I think for me, the wall paper beadboard will be much easier to use.
At one time I had it in my bath.
And like you, I want to be able to remove it easily if I ever get in the mood for change.
The wall paper beadboard makes it easy to change and it does look so real once up.
Your post has made me so excited to actually get started on mine. :)
    Your kitchen looks fabulous.
    Thanks for sharing.

  23. I love beadboard. The only place we have it in our home is on our screened in porch's ceiling. You are so clever to use the beadboard wallpaper on your open kitchen cabinets and back splash. It looks great! It makes it look like a piece of furniture....a beautiful white hutch. And, yes, all of your lovely china will just pop with that background. I've been having a wonderful time going through your blog and re-reading your past posts. I even copied a few of your organizing tips. We're off to a small RV Show today. They should have a few of the Class Bs there. I don't dare show my dining room now because we had to take our Pleasure Way in for service and all the bedding and basement stuff from the van is sitting in our dining room. LOL!

  26. Great ideas, I've been planning on using beadboard wall paper inside my cabinets too, to help lighten them up a bit (hubs wants to kill me). I love how you added the bead board on the bottom too, that was very clever and not "damage" anything when you want to remove. The hutch now looks like a piece of furniture after you added everything!

  27. That looks wonderful. I see no reason for you to ever remove it.

  33. You could use either a quality acrylic or oil-based paint to topcoat a beadboard backsplash, but the key to easy clean-up will be the gloss. Remember, the higher the sheen, the easier to clean; and it rhymes, too! A high gloss finish will wipe clean easily with a damp sponge.
