North Carolina Bedroom

Today I'm sharing the pictures of the master 

bedroom in our place in North Carolina.

 Last week I showed the 'bear' themed

guest bedroom and bathroom.

 The master bedroom was put together with

things we had; some older pieces of furniture

 that were used in previous homes,

 and great sale and found items.

Very budget decorating.

 A Longaberger basket filled with colorful
yarn and knitting supplies.

 I'm still working on that chunky colorful scarf. 

That's the extent of my knitting skills.

All the bedding: matelasse' cover and shams, 

log cabin quilt and shams, pillows

  and lamps were found at the 

JCP outlet on sale for 80% off. 

The original watercolors were from Larry's 

parents. We had them reframed with new

 matts. They look better here than anywhere 

we've had them in the over the years.

 Now, the log headboard was a real find!

 It was a twin bed that was discarded in 

my Florida neighborhood on bulk trash day. 

You should have seen me trying to load 

these heavy pieces by myself into our van. 

They are perfect here. Larry joined the 

two pieces; the headboard and footboard 

(luckily they were both the same size) 

to make a king size rustic log headboard,

for FREE! The rest of the bedroom 

furniture were family pass-downs.

Drapery panels were $10/pair. 

The set of 4 oil paintings were also 

 found on sale

at the JCP Outlet store.

The colors work great in this room

The ceiling fan has a rustic mountain motif.

It has two lights and the top one 

can be used as a soft night light.

The wild oil painting above the mirror was

 from a church yard sale here. 

I got it for $4.   

Larry built the rustic wood frame from a

 discarded pallet, as he has done HERE. 

My other thrifted painting is HERE.

A Jack Schmitt watercolor is another one

we've had for years.

 It's great that our art works so

 beautifully with the decor we have here. 

Rustic frame I found on sale at Target and

an old lamp.

A collection of thrifty throws. 

I find these handmade afghans at 

the many thrift stores here. 

I wash and dry them, so they are 

fluffy soft to snuggle with.   

Some are stored in a Longaberger basket.

This branch ladder was found at a local crafts 

show. I've added a few lap blankets, 

a cowboy hat and rope I found in the garage.

The top of the dresser had an old oil lamp 

that I've added electric to, a dough bowl 

filled with sweetgum balls that I gathered 

on a road trip stop by a Florida forrest. 

That's a poster sized picture of me

 a few years ago....OK many years ago.

That was carved into the stone walls above 

the entrance of my junior high school in 

Florida, Robert E. Lee. 

I never knew what it meant, but I do now!

The Bear Bedroom

Here's our guest bedroom in North Carolina

It's quite a change from our decorating in South Florida.

A cabin look here with black bears,
pine trees, quilts, and lots of red.

Here's how the room started.

The sliders to the large deck.

We got to use some of the art that we've
collected over the years and have used in
previous northern homes. 

 Winter watercolors are by artist Jack Schmitt

Most have a fall or winter theme and are 

better suited for our place in NC.

A wood carving from Germany of the Lorsch

Rathaus, my father's family birthplace.

Larry's old Cornell Lacrosse sticks are used
for the drapery panels. The are the old ones
made of wood and leather.

Before we added the headboard, watercolors
and wood trim to the room.

We added architectural interest with wood 

trim molding stained to match the floors.

Into guest bath. It also has a bear theme.

The deck in the summer with access from

the guest room sliders.

A nice spot to sit.

A custom made king headboard.

With a hidden switch for a night light.

I used a template from a metal kleenex box

I have in the guest bathroom.
I'll post that room next.

I've had this old red trunk for years.

It sits at the foot of the bed and stores

 seasonal clothes.

Now we are ready for our guests! 

Just kidding, we always make them breakfast!

Bedroom Makeover with Craig's List Bed

I had been on the lookout for a new (to me)
king-size bed for my bedroom.

This is the bedroom before.

A four poster iron canopy bed that I
 bought for $59 many years ago.
That's the doggie's shabby chic cottage
(crate) at the foot of the bed.

This bed tray is on top of the crate.

I've had this bed for years and it was fine
 but it was time for a change.

Although, I did like decorating it for Christmas.

Lots of pictures HERE.

I wanted to find a large wood headboard and
 footboard that I could possibly paint white.

Something with lots of carvings, swirls and details.

I sold my bed on CL for $150, so that was
what I had to spend for another bed.

I found this one, large bed with 

headboard, footboard and side rails for $150.

It had all the details I wanted and 

it was in perfect condition.

We cleaned, polished and assembled it to see
 how it would look before painting.

Now I'm thinking that I like the wood tones.

So I'm leaving it like it is for now. 

I can always paint it later.

 It's such a different look in here.

Soon I'll change the bedding for winter 

and decorate the room for Christmas.

 That will be the test.

mea great recipe for Shrimp Alfredo.
They were making dinner
when we picked up the bed.
