The Furniture Lived Happily Ever 'AFTER' & DIY Chalk Paint

When last we met my furniture painting was
looking grim, but that story has a
Happy Ending!
Buffet After
Buffet Before
 First we sanded the top.
I wanted the top stained dark and the bottom
distressed shabby white.
I stained it using a can we had in the garage.
 Minwax English Chestnut
The previous post on the beginning of
 this project is HERE.
I improved on the chalk paint formula and
it was easier to apply.
Chalk Paint
2 T unsanded grout
2 T water
1 C flat latex paint
Combine the grout and water until smooth.
Stir in the paint. Mix more as needed.
The flat paint is Behr from Home Depot.
The color is Benjamin Moore's Cloud White
A Mary Emmerling favorite.
I started distressing using a block with 150 sandpaper.
The chalk paint makes it very easy to distress.
 A little here and there.
 Hitting the edges and corners.
We applied several coats of natural
Minwax Paste Finishing Wax to the top.
Larry buffed between wax applications with
a buffer attachment on his cordless drill .
A light protective sheen. Very smooth.
Then we moved it into place.
It's in the dining room niche.
 That's the original hardware.
I cleaned it with.....
I'll show that in another post. Click HERE.
I added two Waterford lamps I was using elsewhere.
A little silver for sparkle and a blue and yellow
vase that I thought brought out the colors
in the oil painting.
 Here's the space before.
Here's the space after.
Before.
After.
To make me even happier about my little $39
thrift store server, I found this picture
of a Ballard Design server for $1,249.
Saving me $1,200!
The Ballard piece is a reproduction of
a Louis XVI sideboard server. A knock-off.
That makes mine a.....knock-knock off!

Cheers!

    1. I found a quart of the royal blue paint color for the niche in the bargain bin at Home Depot for $1.00. I don't know the color name.

    2. I would have loved to use that color!
I'll have to check my local Home Depot, although I don't think I'll get as lucky! So kind of you to respond--thank you.

    3. I had Home Depot do a color match from the stir stick I had saved. If you give them this number 632612200687 they can pull up the formula in their computer. I wish you didn't have your reply to email blocked so that I could get in tough with you.

  18. Rita, Love how that turned out, how u have it staged, and being that cobalt is my fave color, love your wall color! It all goes so well together.
I have made tons of chalk paint with the plaster of paris recipe. I think it's better. 2:1 ratio (paint-PofP) mix the p of p with hot water before adding to your paint. Smooth as can be. Try it sometime!

  19. Your paint project turned out beautifully! Now... the big question ... would you do it again? I am up to my EARS in painting projects now and trying to convince myself that I love doing it.
Yeah, I do. Love doing it. Keep repeating that ... I love it, I do....

But I will say your piece was WELL worth the work! It looks perfect in that setting, too.
